Retinitis pigmentosa Treatment

The treatment applied in Cuba for Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), has the objective of controlling the development of this disease as another alternative among all the efforts carried out throughout the, whole world to improve the quality of life of those people who suffer from it. The investigations carried out in our institution and in other international institutions have shown the necessity to develop a strategy to treat retinal degeneration diseases with a new conception.

The treatment consists of the following procedures the performance of unique surgical technique created by Dr. Orfilio Pelaez Molina after years of research and experimental surgery on animal models is the most important part of the treatment. This unique surgical procedure called Revitalizing Surgery (R VS) is an ocular microsurgery in which an implant of the own orbital fatty tissue from the back of the patient’s eye is placed ondiveloping suprachoroidal bed, developing an angiogenesis mechanism that increases the choroidal and retinal blood circulation, the blood flow, the presence of different growth factor to favoring the control of the neural and vascular remodeling processes that occur in retinas with Retinitis Pigmentosa and other retinal degenerations. The increase of the cell neuroactivity due to the stimulation of different neurotrophic elements is another positive result after surgery.

The ozone therapy is another treatment used in patients considering some the ozone properties as strong germicide, inmunomodulador, and also as a remarkable antioxidant agent, controlling free radicals, lipid peroxidation and increasing oxygen concentration in tissues which it is used in low dosages according to the studies carried out in the Cuban Ozone Research Center and other international studies. The decrease of blood viscosity and the increase of red blood cell membrane distensibility, enhance flexibility and effectiveness of the red blood cell Ozone is given in intravenous and rectal routes. Materials used in this treatment are for single use following international recommendations.

According to the stage and manner of progression of the disease, the therapeutical behaviors in each case may vary. After the 21 day treatment the patient requires an annual ophthalmological evaluation. In the second and the next evaluation the patient should stay at the clinic for two weeks. Those evaluations will determine the steps to follow according to the results of the previous treatment. A new cycle of treatment will be evaluated so as to guarantee the disease control.
