Estatua Cristo de La Habana

high Christ of Havana

Estatua cristo de la habana From this position we can admire 4 sculptures, on top of that hill, we can see a 23m  high Christ of Havana, carved in Carrara marble by the Cuban prestigious sculptress Gilma Madera. Sculpture very different from the classical images for having sensual characteristics (the clothes are stuck to the body, and it’s not hanging from a cross but blessing the city). The artist copied the face from one of her couples. The statue is a result of promise to God made by the wife of Batista a former president during the republics.  On March the 13th, 1956 he suffered an attack at the presidential palace held by a group of rebels trying to make justice against the assassin by the means of theirs own hands. The wife, a very religious person, promised that she was going to build the tallest statue of Christ on earth in case her husband could escape unhurt from the attack. Afterwards the president himself liked the idea and signed a contract with the famous Cuban artist Gilma Madera with the idea of an statue of 90 m high. However Gilma wasn’t agree with the dimensions and kept her own idea on hers way to Italy. The sculpture was carved right at grounds of Carrara quarries, that’s why it was definitive late for changes when the President and his wife saw the statue at it final size. To avoid the complains Gilma explained that from the aesthetical point of view it was ridiculous to put a statue of 90 m. over a 60 m. hill. But to comfort them she said that the hole complex statue + hill reaches the high of 83 m. so isn’t too small and was easy to see it from far
